Lady Windermere's Fan by Oscar Wilde "I can resist everything except temptation" wrote Oscar Wilde in Lady Windermere’s Fan. Can we tempt you with our planned theatre visit for May to see Oscar Wilde’s first masterpiece at The Royal Exchange, Manchester. The play was an overnight success when it premiered in London in 1892 and it will be directed at Manchester by Greg Hersov. He also directed Zack, which we saw at our last visit to Manchester. A brief synopsis of the play, issued by the theatre, is: ‘Young, rich, beautiful and newly married, Lady Windermere seems to have it all. That is until she is visited by one of London society’s most notorious gossips, who suggests that not only is her husband having an affair with the mysterious Mrs Erlynne, but that this woman is about to turn up to Lady Windermere’s 21st birthday ball. Soon nothing is as it seems in this comic thriller, full of intrigue, jealousy and brilliant one-liners.’ Tickets £17.50 and £15.00, exclusive of coach fare. The £17 tickets are at stage level and the £15 tickets are on high seats at the back, where we were for Zack. Booking is now closed for this production.

Surprises by Alan Ayckbourne This is Alan Ayckbourne's 76th play, and is a Stephen Joseph Theatre co-production with Chichester Festival Theatre. It is also a World Premiere. How exciting is that? The synopsis given out by the theatre is: ' Love stories yet to happen, in a future filled with surprises. Who is the amorous stranger, Titus, who materialises in young Grace’s bedroom? Can she believe he is who he says he is? For her parents, Franklin and Martha, does love everlasting still hold true if death is postponed indefinitely? Can lawyer, Lorraine, who prides herself on her infallibility, have finally discovered the ideal partner, one who is also never wrong? Will lonely secretary Sylvia, after unhappy affairs with everyone from deep sea divers and space shuttle pilots, ever find her Mr Right? '
Given the distance and that it’s a 1.30 pm production, we will be setting off early for this one – probably 8.30/8.45 am – and will build in time post-production for tea/fish and chips/whatever, leaving Scarborough sometime after 6.00 pm Tickets £12.50 exclusive of coach fare. There are a few tickets left for this visit. If you would like to go, please contact Bea Jagger by email or by telephone on 01629 582226.
