Why does everybody seem to know a bit more about wine than you do – or do they? The objectives of the Wine Appreciation Group will be to provide an understanding of the history, geography, evolution and development of wine making and to appreciate the nuances of wine tasting. You never know – the south and south-westerly facing slopes of the Derwent River Valley could become a major grape growing area! There will be occasional visits to various vineyards within England and Wales. It is hoped that this Group will help members to increase their knowledge and appreciation of wine. The group’s co-ordinator is Derek Mitchell, who can be contacted by email by clicking on his name, or by telephone on 01629 593994. Meetings are currently held in the evening (7.30 – 9.30 pm) of the second or last Tuesday of each month at St Elphin’s Park during which there will be discussions and wine tasting sessions. There is a nominal charge of £3.00 per member for each evening and these contributions will go towards the cost of the wine and nibbles. |

During 2011, the Wine Appreciation Group had nine successful meetings at St Elphin’s Park and the year ended with a Christmas Blind Tasting Quiz, after which prizes were awarded. All of these meetings have given members excellent reviews and thorough evaluations of wines from different parts of the world including California, South America, South Africa, Spain, Lake Garda region of Italy and England. There was also a very entertaining and amusing evening at a local vegetarian restaurant, where the meal was accompanied by a selection of wines. We have decided that there should be no limit to the number of members attending each meeting, although members must inform the coordinator beforehand that they wish to attend. Anyone interested in joining the Wine Appreciation Group should contact Derek Mitchell. Our meetings during the first half of 2012 will still be in the Chapel at St Elphin's Park on the second Tuesday of the month and start at 7.30 pm. The timetable for the next six months is listed below. The first meeting will be hosted by Bea Jagger, who will provide an introduction to Portuguese wines. We will also be having a meal in a local restaurant during May (details and dates to be arranged), where the meal will be accompanied by a selection of wines. |
